Twenty years later and Neil Massey is back shooting with Boxfresh.
Last time around it was the early 2000s. London, Ibiza, clubs, streets, questionable trims and whatever else was happening around the brand at the time.
Looking back, a lot’s changed since then, and a lot hasn’t.
For London Orbital, Neil jumped back behind the camera and spent the day in South London with Simms and his friends Bib Sama and Petit Problème. The idea was pretty loose: follow them around and see where we end up.
London Orbital is about movement. How people move around London, but also how music, clothes, friends and ideas move with them. The stuff that travels between a studio, a night out, a bus journey home and whatever happens the next day.
Simms sits right in the middle of that. He’s a DJ, producer, Foundation FM resident and one of the names pushing jungle somewhere new. He’s also a sound guy, fun to be around, has his own style and apparently has a mate on every corner of South London. He lives the world London Orbital was designed for.
And Neil knows how to document it. He first shot for Boxfresh when the brand was surrounded by a different generation doing much the same thing: making music, throwing parties, starting things, meeting people and getting on with it.
So we went back into his archive too.
Not because we’re particularly interested in pretending it’s 2002 again but putting the two sets of images next to each other just puts things into perspective. It’s the same photographer, brand and city, always moving, always changing and always energised by the people at the heart of it.
Twenty years later, we’re back.
